From its past as a hub of military strength at Norton and George Air
Force bases, San Bernardino County is moving forward to its future
with the development of those former Air Force facilities as com-
mercial airports. The county's retail environment also has shifted dra-
matically upward in the last decade, with the addition of major
shopping and lifestyle centers that annually outdraw some of the
Southern California region's biggest tourist attractions. Victoria
Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario Mills in Ontario are
among the entertainment destinations that not only keep San
Bernardino County shoppers at home, but also attract sales tax
money from outside the county.
Much of San Bernardino County's current success can be traced to
the transportation improvements it has developed over previous
decades. The county's immediate access to major freeways, airports
and rail lines make it a leader in Southern California's growing
"goods movement" industry, which employs thousands of workers
across dozens of employment sectors. The county, its transporta-
tion infrastructure and its able workforce play a crucial role in re-
ceiving products that are built overseas and moving them, along
with products made in the busy Southern California region, on to
the rest of the country. Many businesses in San Bernardino County
report that they started here or relocated here specifically because
the transportation system allows them quick and convenient access
to the Southwestern and Pacific Northwest regions of the United
States, as well as the massive Southern California market. Many of
the workers who fuel the county's economy were educated right
here at home at some of the region's colleges and universities, in-
cluding California State University, San Bernardino; the University of
Redlands; and, nearby, the University of California, Riverside.
Long considered the job creation engine of California, the Inland
Empire region that includes San Bernardino County retains the po-
tential to drive the state's economy, and that of Southern California,
to new heights. Regional economic forecasts have predicted that
the region will add more than a million people in the next few years,
and many of those new residents will make their homes in San
Bernardino County. That expected growth, as well as San
Bernardino County's ability to provide businesses with an affordable
entry point into the entire West Coast, means the county's long-term
economic prospects are bright. San Bernardino County and its in-
dividual cities each stand ready to work with potential job develop-
ers on projects that will allow companies to sprout, relocate to the
area or expand their existing operations.
Quality of Life
San Bernardino County also has much to offer when it comes to re-
location decisions that affect employees. The county has a wide
range of housing options, from new and trendy apartments and
condominiums to large-lot homes with good schools and nearby
parks. Many of the county's neighborhoods are within a short drive
of Southern California's world-class dining and entertainment op-
tions, but without the housing costs typically associated with living
in Los Angeles or Orange counties. And, of course, there is plenty
to do close to home, which makes living in San Bernardino County
doubly enjoyable. Each individual city offers its own strengths. For
example:
· Healthcare is a strong selling point for San Bernardino County,
thanks in large part to the world-class medical facilities at Loma
Linda University Medical Center in the City of Loma Linda.
· Redlands, home to the University of Redlands and scores of his-
toric homes, adds a unique flavor to the county's makeup.
· The cities of Ontario and Rancho Cucamonga feature gleaming
office buildings, high-end restaurants, the Citizens Business Bank
Arena, Ontario Convention Center and LA/Ontario International
Airport.
· Chino and Chino Hills mix the county's agricultural past with its in-
creasingly upscale housing development to create a nice
city/rural blend.
· The cities of San Bernardino, Fontana, Colton and Rialto provide
a historical context while helping to push the county forward.
· High Desert communities like Hesperia, Victorville and the Town
of Apple Valley are the new boom towns, providing young fami-
lies with opportunities for home ownership and an increasing job
and commercial base. Needles offers convenient access to the
recreational opportunities along the Colorado River.
· Military bases in the San Bernardino County desert are stable em-
ployment centers that companies can build around. With thou-
sands of U.S. military personnel at Fort Irwin near Barstow and
the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine
Palms, there is a steady stream of government-backed wages en-
tering the local economy every month.
· Mountain communities like Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead
offer world-class skiing and hiking opportunities, along with re-
sort living and fine dining.
